Numbers hit with points deduction
The 3 points from the Ashton Prime v Dowgate match on the 16th October have been awarded to the visitors after Prime were found to have fielded an unregistered player in their 5-0 win.
The player in question was substitute David Ellis, who joined the action with just under 20 minutes to go and the score already standing at 4-0.
It was Ellis' first appearance of the season, but he had already made 33 appearances in total across the previous 2 seasons, and was Prime's player of the season in 2006/7.
Manager Ashley Goldsmith appealed against the decision to reverse the result, stating that it was an honest error in not signing Ellis on - either before the game or as an emergency signing on the day - and besides, the result was already a foregone conclusion when he did come on.
However, the league executive committee have decided to uphold the decision - a move that Goldsmith is very disappointed with.
He commented "We as a club are upset and slightly disillusioned with the league's decision. I understand that we have broken a fundamental law, but as the player himself said, if you act to the letter of the law as opposed to the spirit of the law you leave yourself open to ridicule.
The spirit of the law in this case is surely to stop clubs fielding a 'ringer' - but clearly that is not the case here."
Prime have made an excellent start to the season, winning three and losing narrowly just once from their first five league outings, and progressing to the quarter-finals of the Tunbridge Wells Charity Cup and Goldsmith is hopeful that this setback doesn't cost the club dearly.
