Leigh 8-0 Ashton Prime

Saturday 7th March 2015, Leigh Village Green

With injured boss Jamie Sykes away on stag do duty, the reigns were handed to Tom Buckland for the trip to Leigh.

Buckers had to contend with the absence of Sykes, Taylor and late-withdrawal Ferguson but Stu Hodges had been brought in to take the keeper's gloves.

It was a 4-5-1 formation with Siekanka supported by Nowak and the lesser-spotted Sander from wide positions.

Leigh immediately pressurised Prime but it was a fortunate moment that saw them take the lead when a powerless shot from the edge of the box bobbled in front of Hodges and somehow trickled past him into the net.

Prime kept going and started to gain a foothold with Sander and Buckland linking up well down the right, but Siekanka was an isolated figure up front against the tall Leigh backline.

It was 2-0 before the break as Leigh broke and their striker rounded the keeper and finished beyond Barnham's ungainly lunge on the line.

After the break, Leigh added a 3rd when Prime took a short goal-kick and Westcott miss-hit his clearance straight to their striker who smashed the ball into the roof of the net.

A 4th goal soon followed from a near post corner as Prime defended embarrassingly badly to let the ball run right across the face of goal for an easy tap-in.

Davis came on for Buckland who took the easy option of taking himself off despite being one of the best Prime players to that point.

When a 5th goal was meekly conceded, Buckland brought the stricken Goldsmith on for the tiring Sander with Excell moved to the wing and Goldsmith up front.

The first thing Goldsmith did was to be called for a foul throw by the ref despite both feet being grounded and protests from the on-looking Prime fan club (David Ellis) who stood 1 yard away. To say that Goldsmith took this decision well would be a massive lie!

Leigh then scored a 6th with their midfielder volleying home for a great finish - but by then Prime had pretty much given up.

A 7th goal trickled over the line before Prime's misery was compounded when Nowak failed to get out of Goldsmith's way from a header and the team-mates clashed heads with Goldsmith receiving treatment for a cut eyebrow and Nowak leaving the field concussed and latterly visiting hospital for stitches.

It was 8-0 at the end and the worst part was the lack of celebration from the Leigh players as even they realised that there was little pleasure in playing such a weak opponent.

The two sides meet again at Cadogan next week and it could be a completely different story...if Prime can make 7 or 8 new signings!
