Ashton Prime 1-6 AFC Valour Horsmonden

Saturday 4th October 2014, Cadogan Recreation Ground, Tunbridge Wells

Ashton Prime's fine winning run at the start of the 2014/15 season was ended abruptly amidst torrential rain at Cadogan.

Prime's squad of 13 from the cup win at Tonbridge Invicta Reserves were all available again with Sander and Williams making welcome returns. Taylor stepped out of the 14 ahead of his long distance run on the Sunday.

Williams' traffic problems denied him a return to the first XI. Buckland came in at right-back as Prime reverted to a 4-4-2.

It was clear from the off that the calibre of opponent was markedly higher than anything Prime had faced so far and on 15 minutes they scored a goal that proved the point. Prime half-cleared a corner to the Valour full-back who smashed a 25 yard rocket into the top corner - giving Overy no chance.

Valour doubled their lead when their left-winger got to the byline and his cut-back was rolled into the corner with Prime again cut apart at the back.

Things went from bad to worse when another cross from the left made it's way across the Prime goal and when Barnham failed to cut it out, their striker had an easy tap-in.

The scoreline was very harsh on the home side who had their fair share of the play and they battled back into the game with Siekanka and Ferguson working hard up front and the midfield 4 starting to get a foot-hold on proceedings.

Prime were awarded a free-kick just to the left of centre 25 yards out and after Goldsmith advised captain Abu that if the skipper left it to him, he would score easily, Abu proved that he was right to step up as he curled a beauty into the top corner.

Suddenly things had changed around and when Valour defender Cooper let a ball slip under his foot, Siekanka was clean through with the chance to make it 3-2, but the keeper did well to block his shot.

Prime missed another guilt-edged chance to pull another goal back when Ferguson headed over an open goal after the ball rebounded to him.

It was 3-1 at the break but with Goldsmith feeling his hamstring, Williams was sent on at the back for the second half as the rain contiuned to pour down.

Valour came out of the traps quickly and Overy was called on to make a couple of good saves and punches, but it wasn't long before they scored the killer 4th goal.

Barnham was replaced by Sander and then immediately Williams felt his groin pull, forcing Sykes to bring on Abraham with Abu pressed into service as an emergency centre-back.

The skipper did well in his unaccustomed role, but his presence was missed in midfield as Prime struggled to keep the ball and every time they did get it, Sykes kept shooting from 45 yards - with little success!

Valour ran in 2 further goals as Prime became ragged in the closing stages. The goals were very harsh on Overy who had performed heroics to keep the score down.

It was a relief when the final whistle eventually came and everyone could escape the rain and reflect on a disappointing performance.
